Even the coolest pool and hottest patio in town can look a little sparse and lost without some landscaping around them. The fall, winter, and spring seasons are great times to think about ways to improve your backyard even more.

From low-water landscapes to creating a lush oasis, there are virtually countless ways to utilize your backyard’s space. And we can help, if you’re ready to talk. However, if you’re still in the brainstorming phase, check out some of our favorite ways to landscape around your dream pool and patio.

Incorporated Landscaping

One of the best ways to landscape in your custom pool and patio areas is by incorporating the garden and landscape with the pool and patio themselves. What this means is, you can add planters, flowers, and other plants to structures and areas near the pool and patio.

Not only does this add a touch of color to your beautiful backyard, pool, and patio, it also can provide shade for various outdoor areas in the form of small trees and large bushes. Shade over the pool is always a plus for those late summer days.

Desert Landscape

One of the more popular and ecologically sound options these days is to design a desert garden or landscape around your pool or patio. This sort of design includes lots of sandy rocks imitating the look and feel of the desert. Once installed, you can plant cactus, aloe vera, and other low-water plants.

The benefits are just that: no water. Desert options not only look cool, they also provide you with a much lower maintenance cost in the long run, as well as helping you to save money on your water bill! A true win-win.

Combine the Pool and Patio

We don’t mean physically combine the pool and patio – though that would be cool. What we mean is, you can use landscaping to turn the backyard into one, congruent area. With the proper landscaping, you can bridge any gap between your pool and your patio. Using chairs, concrete, and gardening, your pool and your patio can become one.

Full-Scale Jungle

If you’re a true plant lover, this option is for you. The opposite of the desert garden, you can build a full-scale oasis in your backyard, including a fountain, pond, and tropical trees like miniature palm trees. Better yet, add a clearing among the foliage and chairs in that area or even a hammock.

This also does not even need to be something extravagant; it can be something you work towards over time, by doing a section at a time. Make it a project for the whole family, or call on the professionals to help. Whatever fits your needs, timeline, and budget.

Planters and Containers

Using large-scale planters and containers is a great way to spice up your backyard without going too crazy. Some planters can even be installed on the concrete of your pool, giving you longevity with the plants inside.

For added style, you can place planters in your already finished garden, creating some texture and color in your beautiful backyard. Planters are also a great way to add shade and color to a patio, as there is a huge assortment of plants that can hang and grow well under the cover of an awning.

Minimalist Designs

Don’t like any of these options? Prefer an uncluttered space? We understand. Instead of adding, why not take things away? Utilize a design that includes lawn, pool, patio, and little else. In recent years, it’s become extremely popular to not even include concrete around the pool, with grass leading all the way to the water’s edge.

There are plenty of chairs and recliners that lend themselves to this type of design as well, which makes it all the easier when you’re getting your backyard ready.

Mix it Up

Finally, mix things together. Use multiple tips from above to make your backyard your own. Make a minimalist backyard that also includes a desert garden, or create a lush oasis that helps combine your pool and patio: whatever works for you and whatever you love, because it’s about you.
