What Is a Sun-Ledge?
This pool feature is a long, flat “shelf” just below the waterline that usually sits above the shallow end of the pool. It allows swimmers to sun themselves with the ability to dip their feet in cool water when temperatures soar.
Types Of Sun-Ledges
Two of the most popular designs are open shelves and enclosed shelves.
An open sun-ledge allows swimmers to take a dip without a barrier between the shelf and the shallow end of the pool.
An enclosed shelf is similar in design but is closed off from the rest of the pool. This can be an important safety feature if you’ve got small children.
What Are the Best Dimensions for a Sun-Ledge?
Obviously, each pool is different, and its size should be taken into account when designing a sun-ledge. Most owners, however, choose to install a ledge that’s 7 feet x 8 feet. If you envision entertaining many guests, you may want to consider a larger shelf.
Upgrading the Concrete Patio to Pavers
Never underestimate the importance of your pool decking. Some say it’ll get even more use than your pool!
There are several choices for decking your pool, but two popular types are poured concrete and paver stones.
While pouring concrete is initially less expensive than installing pavers, concrete is slippery and tends to crack.
Additionally, poured concrete tends to last for 25 years (or, in some cases, longer), while pavers can last up to and even beyond 50 years. That’s because pavers can be repaired fairly easily and are made from stronger materials.
Since the deck consists of individual pieces, pavers are also more flexible and can allow for fluctuation in the ground beneath them.
Finally, most people think pavers are far superior to concrete when it comes to aesthetics.
Adding More Underwater Lights
If you’re aiming to achieve an elegant, stunning look with a big “wow” factor, adding more underwater lights to your pool is an excellent way to do just that.As with interior lighting design, your pool’s underwater lighting can change the overall mood. And you have even more options if you decide to use colored lights.
LED lighting is energy efficient and emits very little heat. The bulbs tend to last longer than incandescent ones and are available in many colors. (You can even find apps on your smartphone that allow you to control brightness or colors!)
Incandescent lights are a traditional option that typically brightens the pool and creates more visibility. This can be an important safety feature as well.
Lighting placement can make a big difference — celestial floor lighting is one exciting option. (These lights dot the bottom of your pool and can create the illusion of stars reflecting in your pool.)
Adding Landscaping
Landscaping is a great way to upgrade your backyard and emphasize the beauty of your pool. The right landscaping can create a little drama (think spotlights aimed up trees) and can have a profound effect on the atmosphere.
Your landscaping design should take into consideration aesthetics, functionality, and lifestyle.
For example, if you plan to use your pool primarily for exercise, you may choose a more understated design.
If, however, you envision hosting elegant pool parties, you may opt for a more opulent style.
Whichever style you choose, remember that the landscaping should highlight the center of the show: your pool.
